When I started working for VFC Shawnee in 2023, I quickly noticed the need for a space where children could go during class when they were overstimulated. We had children that needed help regulating their emotions and so we began scheduling an additional volunteer during the service time that those children attended who could specifically help those few children. Then, new families started coming who had children who were diagnosed with varying categories of special needs ranging in severity. I have a background in working with children with special needs and I recognized that these children and families needed more support on Sundays than we were currently providing.

Now, we have a class where love knows no boundaries, where inclusion thrives, and where every child is celebrated for who they are. Comrades started in at the Norman campus in 2016, and now it is at VFC Shawnee! Comrades is a room for children with special needs created as a haven for children of all abilities. This room isn’t just a space; it’s a testament to a community’s commitment to inclusivity and support for families with children who have special needs. Our dedicated volunteers ensure that every child who enters into Comrades has the opportunity to learn about God in a welcoming and safe environment.

Comrades fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie among its young attendees. Here, friendships bloom, and faith takes root in the hearts of children who are valued for exactly who they are. Together, they explore stories of the Bible, laying the foundation for a lifelong journey of spiritual growth.

For parents of children with special needs, finding a supportive community can make all the difference. Comrades isn’t just a place for children; it’s also a way for families who often face unique challenges to connect with one another. There have been multiple testimonies of families who have not been able to attend church for years because they felt their children did not have a place to belong or they were too worried about their children and unable to focus on the message the pastor was bringing who are now able to attend church weekly. Comrades has been life-changing for these families! We are so happy to be able to provide a safe space for these amazing children.

In the end, having a space like Comrades within a church setting is more than just a room; it’s a reminder that every child, regardless of ability, is a precious gift worthy of celebration and support. It’s a place where differences are not just accepted but cherished, and where every individual is seen as a beloved member of the VFC family. We have some of the most amazing, dedicated, faithful volunteers serving in our Comrades room every single week. Without them, this space would not be possible. I am so thankful for these children, their families, and our volunteers. I believe Comrades is one of the best parts of VFC Shawnee and I am so happy to be a part of it!

Comrades is offered at the Norman campus at 10:00 and 11:30am and at the Shawnee campus at 10:00am.
